The October 17th edition of SmackDown aired live from the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn faced Shinsuke Nakamura and Randy Orton in the main event. Here are 3 winners and losers from this week’s SmackDown:
SmackDown GM Daniel Bryan kicked off this week’s episode of SmackDown and got a tremendous reaction from his hometown crowd. Bryan called out Sami Zayn and Sami danced his way to the ring. Zayn then danced around Bryan in the ring for a moment and then Bryan stated that he was disappointed in his actions at Hell in a Cell when he helped Kevin Owens defeat Shane McMahon.
Sami then proceeded to cut a terrific promo about how Daniel Bryan had the fans behind him and how the fans never held up their end of the bargain for him. Sami stated that the fans never catapulted him to the main event of Wrestlemania and that he took back ownership of his career when he helped Owens at Hell in a Cell. Sami added that he doesn’t care what the fans think and then called Daniel Bryan a housewife. Kevin Owens came down to the ring and continued to insult Bryan. Daniel then left the ring and said he was going to the back to find two Superstars to punch Owens and Zayn in the face.
Natalya teamed up with Tamina and Lana to face Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Naomi tonight on SmackDown. Charlotte picked up the victory for her team after submitting Lana with the Figure Eight. After the match, Natalya attacked Charlotte from behind and brought her to the outside of the ring.
Charlotte battled back and was able to avoid the chair shot from Natalya. Charlotte then grabbed the chair and Natalya cowardly ran away through the crowd. Natalya retained her SmackDown Women’s Championship by attacking Charlotte with a chair at WWE Hell in a Cell 2017 and getting herself disqualified. This feud is continuing and it feels like a matter of time before Charlotte is once again SmackDown Women’s Champion.
Sin Cara was on SmackDown tonight for some reason and he faced United States Champion Baron Corbin. Before the match started, Corbin announced that the United States Championship Open Challenge was over and that Sin Cara would not be getting a shot at the title.
This match was pretty short, but Sin Cara actually pulled out the victory over the United States Champion. Sin Cara won the match via count-out and the announcers stated that he might be in line for a United States Championship match down the line. I completely forgot Sin Cara was on the SmackDown roster until tonight’s episode of SmackDown.
WWE Champion Jinder Mahal came down to the ring with the Singh Brothers for a Survivor Series announcement. Mahal said that he still isn’t getting the respect that he deserves and challenged Universal Champion Brock Lesnar to a match at Survivor Series. Mahal was about to leave when AJ Styles showed up.
AJ Styles stated that Mahal has never defeated him and that he wants a shot at the WWE Championship. Mahal laughed at Styles and said that it was a joke that AJ wanted a shot at the title. Styles connected with a Pele Kick that knocked Mahal out of the ring. Later during the show, Mahal approached SmackDown GM Daniel Bryan backstage. Mahal said that Sunil Singh will face AJ Styles next week on SmackDown in Mahal’s honor.
Bobby Roode defeated Dolph Ziggler at Hell in a Cell by rolling him up and grabbing his tights for leverage. On tonight’s episode of SmackDown, Ziggler got his revenge and defeated Roode in the exact same way. This feud will now continue, but the crowd doesn’t seem to care about this storyline at all.
Bobby Roode lost the match tonight and has pretty much lost all momentum since coming to the main roster. Roode was a star in NXT, but already feels like just another Superstar on SmackDown. He absolutely needs to turn heel and get back to his character in NXT. This storyline isn’t helping him at all right now.
Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn defeated Shinsuke Nakamura and Randy Orton tonight in the main event of SmackDown. Zayn hit Orton with a low-blow and then followed it up with a Helluva Kick for the victory. After the match, Owens and Zayn mocked Daniel Bryan backstage. The two Superstars then returned to the entrance ramp and mocked Nakamura and Orton. SmackDown went off the air with Owens yelling “hold me tight” as he shared a hug with Zayn.
Owens and Zayn are now a powerhouse on SmackDown. It was announced that SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon will be returning next week on SmackDown. Shane will have a tough time controlling Owens and Zayn. Owens was a force on his own, but with Sami by his side he has become even more powerful.
