The October 31st episode of SmackDown aired live from the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, VA. Here are 3 winners and losers from this week’s SmackDown:
Bobby Roode faced off against Dolph Ziggler tonight on SmackDown in a 2 out of 3 Falls match. Ziggler picked up the first fall after connecting with a Superkick. Roode then battled back and won the match after hitting a Glorious DDT. Roode is now on Team SmackDown for Survivor Series.
Roode has been stuck in a feud with Dolph Ziggler that was going nowhere. Tonight was their best match of the feud and Roode emerged victorious. I’m hoping that this feud is over now and Roode can now be a part of a bigger storyline. He hasn’t made much of an impact since joining the main roster, but hopefully a new opponent will allow him to do so.
Baron Corbin is currently the United States Champion, but it doesn’t feel like that at all. He still has not been able to recover from losing his MITB cash-in match against Jinder Mahal. I thought that Corbin would be so much farther along by now and would be in the main event picture for every SmackDown PPV.
He is a long way away from being in main event picture right now. He is in a feud with Sin Cara and tonight he got his ass kicked. Sin Cara lost his mind as Corbin was trying to remove his mask and Sin Cara beat Corbin down by the announce table. Corbin then escaped through the crowd. To make matters worse, Corbin isn’t even going to get an opportunity at joining Team SmackDown at Survivor Series. Four spots are full and the final spot will be determined in a match between AJ Styles and Rusev next week.
Rusev and Aiden English got into an argument with New Day backstage tonight. This eventually led to a match between Rusev and Big E. It was looking like Big E had the match won, but Aiden English hopped up on the announce table and started singing. This allowed Rusev to connect with a kick to the back of Big E’s head for the pinfall victory.
It was a pretty meaningless win for Rusev tonight, but I’ll take it. Rusev is a great heel that has just never been put in the right situation. He returned from injury only to lose a terrible Flag Match to John Cena at WWE Battleground. He lost to Randy Orton at SummerSlam in 10 seconds. Any victory is a great victory for Rusev. Happy Rusev Day everyone!
SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon kicked off this week’s episode with a long-winded promo. Shane discussed why SmackDown attacked RAW last week and then announced that he is naming himself the captain of Team SmackDown for Survivor Series. Stephanie McMahon announced that Kurt Angle will be the captain of Team RAW last night. Stephanie also threatened Angle and stated that she is expecting dominance for RAW at Survivor Series and that if that doesn’t happen she will have to replace Angle as GM.
The fact is that Team SmackDown is a mess right now. Daniel Bryan went to RAW last night to try and talk to Kurt Angle because he disagreed with Shane McMahon and the SmackDown roster invading RAW. That didn’t go too well as he was attacked by Kane and stretchered out of the arena. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn clearly still have a vendetta against Shane McMahon and I wouldn’t be surprised if Shane’s team implodes during the men’s 5v5 match at Survivor Series.
Jinder Mahal had a great night tonight on SmackDown. First of all, he cut a great promo on Brock Lesnar and sounded confident while doing so. Mahal has cut so many terrible promos since becoming WWE Champion, it is nice to hear him succeed with one. He needs to do that a couple more times heading into his match with Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series.
Mahal also got the better of AJ Styles tonight. AJ Styles defeated Samir Singh with ease tonight. AJ hit the Styles Clash about 15 seconds into the match for the victory. After the match, Jinder Mahal attacked Styles and planted him with the Khallas. Mahal wasn’t finished and he connected with another Khallas that was even bigger this time. Mahal then celebrated with the WWE Championship while standing tall over AJ Styles.
Kevin Owens faced Shinsuke Nakamura in the main event of this week’s episode of SmackDown. The winner of the match would join Randy Orton, Bobby Roode and Shane McMahon on Team SmackDown for Survivor Series. Owens’ friend Sami Zayn lost his shot at joining the team last week when he was defeated by Randy Orton.
Shinsuke Nakamura had this match in control when Sami Zayn came down to the ring to try and distract Nakamura. Owens instructed Sami to clear off the announce table. Sami did but Orton’s music hit. Randy Orton attacked Sami and slammed him on top of the announce table. Nakamura then connected with the Kinshasa back in the ring for the pinfall victory.
Team SmackDown is now without Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. I get the feeling that this is all setting up for Owens and Zayn to interfere during the men’s 5v5 match and attack Shane McMahon and Team SmackDown. Owens lost the match tonight and subsequently lost his spot on Team SmackDown. However, he may just wind up getting the last laugh at Survivor Series next month.
