WWE Hell in a Cell 2017 takes place this Sunday live on the wWE Network. SmackDown General Manager Shane McMahon will step inside the cell against Kevin Owens. The New Day will put their SmackDown Tag Team Championships on the line inside the cell against The Usos. Let’s take a look back at the 5 greatest Hell in a Cell matches of all time.
This match lasted around 27 minutes and was much better than I thought it was going to be. Batista was the World Heavyweight Champion at the time and had won it from Triple H a few months earlier. Triple H hit the Pedigree during the match but Batista was able to kick out at the last moment. The finish to the match was great as well. Triple H tried to use the sledgehammer but Batista connected with the Batista Bomb to retain his title.
This match was billed as the “End of an Era”. It was the second year in a row that Triple H would battle The Undertaker. This time Shawn Michaels was the special referee and he definitely had an impact on the match. Michaels connected with the Superkick to The Undertaker, who then walked right into a Pedigree. The crowd erupted when Undertaker kicked out at two. In the end, The Undertaker put Triple H away with a Tombstone Piledriver. The Undertaker, Triple H and Shawn Michaels then stood together at the top of the entrance ramp as the crowd showed their appreciation.
The WWF Championship was on the line in this awesome match. If Cactus Jack lost, he had to retire. During the match, Cactus threw the steel steps at Triple H but missed and they tore an exit from the cage. The two Superstars made their way to the top of the cell. Cactus lit his two-by-four covered in barbwire on fire and struck Triple H with it. Triple H then slammed Cactus through the roof of the cell and he crashed through the ring below. It wasn’t over yet, as Triple H still had to hit Cactus Jack with a Pedigree to win the match.
I wouldn’t argue with anyone that has this number one on their list. This match without a doubt provided the best moments in Hell in a Cell history. Mankind took a beating in this match. I’ll never forget watching him fly off the cell and crash through the table live. I thought he was dead. He wasn’t. Mankind was then slammed through the top of the cell and fell hard to the canvas below. Mankind suffered a concussion during this match and tooth became lodged in his nose after it had gone through his lips. He somehow finished this match and it will always remain one of the most memorable matches in WWE history.
The first ever Hell in a Cell match remains the best one of them all in my opinion. Shawn Michaels took a beating as The Undertaker dominated nearly the entire match. Michaels tried to escape the cell after a spot where the camera man got injured and doctors had to check on him. That didn’t work out too well as The Undertaker caught him and busted him open. Michaels tried to escape again and climb up the opposite side of the cell, but ultimately crashed through the announce table.
The match ended with WWE debuting Kane and costing The Undertaker the match. Kane hit The Undertaker with a Tombstone Piledriver and Shawn Michaels was able to get his arm on top of Undertaker for the pinfall victory. It remains my favorite Hell in a Cell match and it is one I still go back and watch to this day.
Discussion: There are a lot of other matches that could be on this list. The Undertaker had two awesome Hell in a Cell matches with Brock Lesnar. There is also the Hell in a Cell match at Armageddon 2000 between Kurt Angle, The Undertaker, Triple H, Stone Cold, The Rock and Rikishi. Who could forget Rikishi falling off the top of the cell and into the back of the pickup truck ringside? The Undertaker and Edge had a great Hell in a Cell match at SummerSlam 2008. These were just the 5 Hell in a Cell matches I enjoyed the most. What are your favorite Hell in a Cell matches? Let us know in the comments below.
