Bret Hart Says HHH’s Match with Undertaker Was Mediocre

Bret Hart spoke with Wrestle Talk TV Extra. Here are some of the things he had to say about Triple H.

“I have a certain amount of respect for Triple H. I remember when he first came in, I remember commenting on stuff that he did. Because I’d usually give wrestlers my thoughts and try to help them on stuff… Triple H has always been a good wrestler. But great? What is he now, a 1,000 time world champion? How great really is he?

“I look at [CM] Punk… I can look at certain wrestlers and I go, this guy is an innovator. Like a Rey Mysterio, who’s done stuff that no one has ever thought of before. Punk has done stuff — really unique moves and you go, ‘gee I’ve never seen anything like that before.’ They innovate all the time, and they create new sequences and moves and things.

“Then you look at someone like Triple H. When I look at him — he’s always had a good look as far as his body went — he always had a pretty muscular physique. But you look at someone like Hunter and you wonder, what has he really done. One move that he ever created that nobody ever saw before or some highspots or an idea for a match… He’s mostly a guy that just showed up and they made him. He’s always been a decent wrestler — I would consider him a good wrestler and pretty talented. But great? I don’t know, I don’t think so.

“What has he ever done that’s great? He’s never had a great match, I don’t think ever. Whenever I look at Triple H’s matches, including the last one he had with Undertaker — and I don’t really mean it as a knock — but I told myself before I watched it because I’m trying to like Paul now these days, that I want to see him do something to make me think he’s got greatness in him.

“Before Triple H wrestled Undertaker last year, I remember watching it and going, ‘I can picture the whole match in my head, I can tell you exactly what this match is going to be like and how it’s going to go. And I remember watching it and it went exactly how I predicted it… I thought it was mediocre at best, maybe a 4 out of 10, or 3 out of 10.

“I think Paul is a little overrated… overrated for being great. I can sit here and tell you that there was one match that he ever had with anybody that I thought was great. It’s kind of a shame, he should have a great match somewhere with somebody. And you’d think that he would have had it by now, but I don’t think he’s a great wrestler.”

it’s funny how he’s trying to knock Triple H but at the same time he’s knocking The Undertaker as well. I personally think the three stages of hell match he had against HBK was pretty damn awesome.

i think the austin 3 stages of hell was phenomonal i dont know if he had one against hbk tho

        • tbro127

Triple H had a 2 out of 3 Falls Match for the WH Championship against HBK at Armageddon 2002. I Dont think they called it a 3 stages of hell match tho – i think it was just a 2 out of 3 falls match

first match street fight 2nd steelcage and the third and deciding fall ladder match yeah it was three stages of hell

        • raidmar

just for confirmation, i double checked on, and sure enough it was 3 stages of hell

So Bret’s gonna end up being one of those bitter old men who pops up saying whether someones good by his standards or not. I remember him putting John Cena over on Raw in Montreal not too long ago also….

And we could also go on about his amazing match with Vinnie Mac at Wrestlemania a few years back too now can we.

I am Hitman fan but that’s bit harsh of him.

      What match was Bret watching???????
      Was he smoking Canadian crack??????
I think he’s just a jealous, bitter man.

Those who can wrestle do. Those who can’t just bitch about everyone else

Bret Hart is bitter with the way things worked out. He was greedy took the money went to WCW was miss used career went nowhere there, got a bunch of concussions at the hands of Goldberg who couldn’t wrestle his way out of a paper bag, and that ended his career. If he would have stayed in WWE he’d be an even bigger legend and would probably still be in the ring.

HHH has been talking shit on bret for years. I’m glad bret fired back and told the truth about hhh. HHH really isn’t a great wrestler, he’s def not in brets league.

Mediocre? I honestly thought HHH vs Taker at WM last year was great. I wouldn’t call it a 9 or 10, because we all knew who would end up winning, but they went out there and beat the shit out of each other and looked good while doing it. That’s all you can ever ask for, really. Or maybe that’s just me. But his match at WM 20 against HBK and Benoit for the WH title was my favorite match he was in. I thought it was great. Bret Hart does seem a little bitter, but I have no idea why. They have each individually had a lot of success during their careers. Triple H may not be the best technical wrestler, but I would never categorize him under “decent”. Every night he would go out there, he would get you on your feet, one way or another. He could captivate you, he could aggrivate you, any emotion he could pull out of you meant he was doing his job right. He could take a beating and give it right back to you. By no means is he the greatest guy in the history of professional wrestling, but he has had an amazing and lengthy career, and one day will be in the Hall of Fame. I Wonder why Bret has such a chip on his shoulder.

Ironman Match vs the Rock at Judgement Day 2000 says otherwise Bret.

    • Beer money Jobber

Bret was a way better technical wrestler than HHH, but HHH could get under your skin with his mic skills. The only time Bret shined on the mic was the “Montreal Screw Job” otherwise he was quite boring.

HHH vs Cactus Jack … made THE GAME and won the respect of many fans.

Amazing performance! HHH vs Rock – Ladder match for the IC title was pretty good too back in the day!
