WWE has begun airing commercials to hype the debut of the WWE Channel in 2012. Though WWE has discussed the venture in stockholder conference calls, this was the first public disclosure of the cable network to the viewing audience.
The advertisement featured a wide variety of WWE footage, from the Bruno Sammartino era in the sixties, to today. With WWE owning the tape libraries of WCW, ECW and various other promotions, the network has access to nearly 100,000 hours of content – The equivalent of 11.4 years of uninterrupted, commercial-free programming.
Vince McMahon has been pushing to expand his empire with a cable channel for years now. It looks like what many skeptics have dismissed as a pipe dream, is coming to reality. This is a major move for Vince, as many within the TV industry still hold his failed XFL project against him.
